What Is It?
Breast reconstruction rebuilds the breast mound after mastectomy or lumpectomy. It can be performed using implants, the patient's own tissue (flap surgery), or a combination of both. Reconstruction can be immediate (at the time of mastectomy) or delayed, and is typically covered under medical insurance in most countries.
How It Works
Implant-based reconstruction uses a tissue expander initially, gradually filled with saline over weeks, then replaced with a permanent implant. Autologous reconstruction uses tissue flaps — from the back (latissimus dorsi), abdomen (TRAM or DIEP), or thigh — to recreate the breast mound with the patient's own tissue. Nipple reconstruction is typically performed as a secondary procedure.
Realistic Results
A reconstructed breast that closely matches the natural breast in size and shape. Autologous reconstruction tends to produce more natural, longer-lasting results than implants. Sensation in the reconstructed breast is reduced but some patients regain partial feeling over time.
Recovery
Varies significantly by technique: implant reconstruction requires 2–4 weeks; autologous flap reconstruction requires 4–8 weeks. Multiple stages are typical over 6–12 months for a full reconstruction.
Risks & Complications
- !Implant: all implant risks including capsular contracture and rupture
- !Flap surgery: flap failure (partial or complete) requiring emergency reoperation
- !Extended surgical time for flap procedures
- !Donor site morbidity (weakness or changes in abdominal function after DIEP/TRAM)
- !Multiple operations required over an extended period
Red Flags — Choose a Clinic Safely
- ⚑Surgeon does not discuss all reconstruction options and their trade-offs
- ⚑Reconstruction is rushed before oncological treatment is fully planned
- ⚑Patient is not offered psychological or breast cancer nurse support
- ⚑Surgeon with no specific breast reconstruction experience offers the procedure
Questions to Ask Before Booking
- What are my options — implant or autologous — and what are the trade-offs for my situation?
- Should I have immediate or delayed reconstruction?
- How will reconstruction affect my cancer treatment (chemotherapy, radiation timing)?
- Who will perform the reconstruction — a plastic surgeon or the oncological surgeon?
- What does the multi-year timeline for full reconstruction look like?
