What Is It?
Breast reduction surgery removes excess breast tissue, fat, and skin to create smaller, lighter, and better-proportioned breasts. Patients seek it to relieve chronic neck, back, and shoulder pain, skin rashes under the breast fold, and difficulties with physical activity and finding well-fitting clothing.
How It Works
Several techniques are used depending on breast size and the amount to be removed. The most common is the inferior pedicle technique using an anchor-shaped (inverted T) incision. The vertical scar or lollipop technique leaves a shorter scar. The nipple and areola are repositioned on a viable pedicle.
Realistic Results
Significantly smaller, lighter breasts with immediate relief of symptoms. Scars are permanent but fade over 12–24 months. The reshaping also lifts the breast to a more youthful position. Most patients report a dramatic improvement in quality of life.
Recovery
Drains for 1–3 days. Sports bra worn for 6 weeks. No lifting or vigorous exercise for 4–6 weeks. Return to desk work in 7–10 days. Full recovery in 4–6 weeks.

Red Flags — Choose a Clinic Safely
- ⚑Surgeon does not discuss the scarring trade-off honestly with the patient
- ⚑No pre-operative mammogram for patients over 40 or with a family history of breast cancer
- ⚑Surgeon proposes removing more tissue than is clinically needed for relief
- ⚑No discussion of breastfeeding implications for patients considering future pregnancy
Questions to Ask Before Booking
- Which technique and scar pattern will you use, and why?
- What is the risk to nipple sensation and future breastfeeding ability?
- How much tissue (grams) will be removed from each side?
- Where will the scars run, and what do they look like at 12 months?
- Will you send the removed tissue for pathological analysis?
