What Is It?

Cheek implants are solid silicone prostheses placed surgically over the cheekbones to permanently add projection, width, or height to the mid-face. Unlike fillers or fat grafting, implants do not absorb or migrate over time and offer a predictable, permanent result.

How It Works

Incisions are made either inside the mouth (intraoral) or through a lower eyelid incision. A pocket is created directly on the bone beneath the periosteum, and a pre-selected silicone implant is placed and often secured with a small titanium screw. The incisions are then closed.

Realistic Results

Immediately visible cheekbone enhancement that becomes fully apparent once swelling resolves in 4–6 weeks. Results are permanent. Malar implants add forward projection; submalar implants add volume to the mid-cheek hollow.

Recovery

A soft diet for 2 weeks, minimal mouth opening, and careful oral hygiene. Significant cheek swelling lasts 2–3 weeks. Most patients return to office work in 1–2 weeks.

Risks & Complications

  • !Implant migration if not secured with a fixation screw
  • !Infection requiring implant removal
  • !Numbness or altered sensation over the cheek
  • !Implant edges becoming palpable or visible with weight loss
  • !Asymmetry between the two sides

Red Flags — Choose a Clinic Safely

  • Surgeon does not use fixation screws or describe how implants will stay in place
  • No imaging or 3D planning to select implant size
  • Implant type or brand not disclosed
  • Surgeon cannot describe both malar and submalar positions or explain which is appropriate for your anatomy

Questions to Ask Before Booking

  • Will the implants be fixed with screws, and through what access?
  • What implant type, size, and shape are you recommending?
  • What is the risk of the implant moving after surgery?
  • How do cheek implants interact with future fat loss in the face?
  • If I want them removed later, is that straightforward?
