What Is It?

Clear aligners (such as Invisalign) are removable, nearly invisible orthodontic devices that gradually straighten teeth through a series of custom-made plastic trays. They are an aesthetically preferred alternative to traditional braces for mild to moderate orthodontic concerns.

How It Works

Digital scans or impressions create a 3D model of the patient's teeth. Software maps the treatment plan from the current to the desired tooth position, and a series of incrementally different aligners are fabricated. Each aligner is worn for 1–2 weeks, moving teeth in small, controlled steps.

Realistic Results

Straightened teeth, improved spacing, and corrected bite issues over 6–18 months depending on complexity. Retainers must be worn after treatment to maintain results, as teeth naturally migrate back without retention.

Recovery

Mild soreness when each new aligner is fitted — resolves within 2–3 days. No restriction on normal activities. Aligners must be worn 20–22 hours per day for effective treatment.

Risks & Complications

  • !Incomplete correction if the patient does not comply with wearing time
  • !Root resorption (very rare) as with any orthodontic treatment
  • !Tooth sensitivity with attachments
  • !Relapse after treatment if retainers are not worn consistently

Red Flags — Choose a Clinic Safely

  • Clear aligners recommended for complex orthodontic cases that require traditional braces or surgical correction
  • Treatment designed by software without adequate clinical dentist involvement
  • No retainer plan discussed before treatment starts
  • Attachments placed on teeth with active decay or gum disease

Questions to Ask Before Booking

  • Is my case suitable for clear aligners, or would braces produce a better result?
  • How many aligners will be in my series, and how long is the estimated treatment time?
  • What retainer will I need after treatment, and for how long must I wear it?
  • Will attachments (bumps on teeth) be needed?
  • What happens if I lose an aligner?
