What Is It?
Cosmetic circumcision removes the foreskin for aesthetic, hygiene, or personal preference reasons in men who are not medically indicated for the procedure. It is also chosen for religious or cultural reasons. When performed with proper technique, it is a safe, straightforward procedure.
How It Works
Under local anaesthesia (or general in some cases), the foreskin is removed using a sleeve resection or guillotine technique. The inner and outer preputial tissue is removed, and the remaining skin edges are carefully approximated with fine absorbable sutures.
Realistic Results
Permanent removal of the foreskin with a clean, well-healed scar at the glans. The appearance can be customised (high or low, tight or loose) based on patient preference. Full healing is complete at 4–6 weeks.
Recovery
Swelling and bruising for 1–2 weeks. No sexual activity for 4–6 weeks. The wound should be kept clean and dry. Erections during sleep may be uncomfortable in the first 2 weeks.
Risks & Complications
- !Wound dehiscence or infection
- !Excessive or inadequate skin removal
- !Scarring or asymmetry
- !Changes in glans sensitivity (usually transient)
- !Rarely: surgical injury to the urethra
Red Flags — Choose a Clinic Safely
- ⚑Surgeon cannot explain the frenular technique or how frenulum preservation is handled
- ⚑No discussion of how much skin to remove and patient input on the preference
- ⚑No anaesthesia or pain management plan discussed
- ⚑Provider does not sterilise equipment properly (sterile field is essential)
