What Is It?

Dental bonding uses tooth-coloured composite resin applied directly to the tooth surface to repair chips, cracks, gaps, or discolouration. It is the most conservative and affordable cosmetic dental treatment — no enamel removal is required, and results are achieved in a single appointment.

How It Works

The tooth surface is lightly etched to help the resin bond. Composite resin in a shade matched to the natural tooth is applied, sculpted, and hardened with a curing light. The bond is then polished to a smooth finish. The entire procedure takes 30–60 minutes per tooth.

Realistic Results

Immediately improved tooth appearance. Composite bonding is less durable than porcelain but is entirely reversible. It lasts 5–10 years with good oral hygiene and avoidance of habits that stress the bonding (nail biting, pen chewing).

Recovery

No recovery needed. Mild sensitivity for 24 hours in some patients.

Risks & Complications

  • !Chipping or staining of the resin over time (more than porcelain)
  • !Colour mismatch if the resin does not exactly match the surrounding enamel
  • !Marginal staining at the edges of the bond
  • !Chipping from hard biting forces

Red Flags — Choose a Clinic Safely

  • Provider uses bonding for cases better served by veneers or orthodontics without explaining the limitations
  • No bite assessment before bonding on damaged or worn teeth
  • Poor shade matching without proper colour selection in natural light

Questions to Ask Before Booking

  • Is bonding the best option for my concern, compared to a veneer or orthodontic treatment?
  • How long will the bonding last with my bite and habits?
  • How will you match the shade to my natural teeth?
  • Can bonding be repaired if it chips?
  • Is there any enamel removal, and if so, is that reversible?
