What Is It?
Dental crowns are full tooth caps that encase the entire visible portion of a tooth to restore its shape, strength, size, and appearance. They are used for badly decayed teeth, cracked or fractured teeth, teeth after root canal treatment, and as the final restoration on dental implants.
How It Works
The tooth is prepared by reducing its size on all surfaces to create space for the crown. An impression or digital scan is taken and sent to a laboratory. A temporary crown is worn while the permanent crown is fabricated. Porcelain, zirconia, or porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns are available, each with different aesthetic and strength characteristics.
Realistic Results
A fully functional, durable restoration that looks and functions like a natural tooth. Crowns last 10–20 years with good oral hygiene. Porcelain and zirconia crowns are highly aesthetic; full-metal crowns are strongest for posterior teeth.
Recovery
Sensitivity for a few days after preparation and crown placement. Bite adjustment appointments may be needed within the first week.
Risks & Complications
- !Sensitivity or discomfort if preparation is too deep
- !Need for root canal treatment if preparation causes pulp inflammation
- !Crown fracture or debonding from excessive biting forces
- !Gum recession exposing the crown margin over time
Red Flags — Choose a Clinic Safely
- ⚑Crowns placed without first treating active decay or gum disease
- ⚑Healthy tooth structure reduced excessively without clinical justification
- ⚑No X-ray or pulp vitality test before preparing a tooth for a crown
- ⚑Temporary crown not provided while the permanent one is fabricated
Questions to Ask Before Booking
- Is a crown absolutely necessary, or can a large filling or inlay address my problem?
- What material do you recommend — porcelain, zirconia, or metal — and why?
- Will I need root canal treatment before or after crown placement?
- How long will the crown last, and what factors affect its longevity?
- Where will the crown margin sit — above or below the gum line?
