What Is It?

Dermabrasion is an ablative skin resurfacing procedure that uses a rapidly rotating instrument to mechanically remove the outer skin layers. It is primarily used for acne scars, deep wrinkles, and uneven skin surface. It is more aggressive than microdermabrasion and requires a meaningful recovery period.

How It Works

Under local anaesthesia or conscious sedation, a diamond fraise or wire brush rotates at high speed and is moved across the treatment area to abrade the skin down to a controlled depth within the dermis. The wound heals with new, smoother skin growing from the deeper dermis.

Realistic Results

Significant improvement in surface irregularities, acne scars, and deep wrinkles after healing at 3–6 months. Results can be dramatic for appropriate scars. Full results are visible once the skin colour normalises at 3–6 months.

Recovery

Raw, weeping wound for 7–10 days. Strict wound care and sun avoidance for several weeks. Redness and pinkness persist for 2–3 months. Complete normalisation at 3–6 months.

Risks & Complications

  • !Prolonged redness (erythema)
  • !Permanent pigmentation changes (hypopigmentation) — risk increases in darker skin types
  • !Scarring if too deep
  • !Infection during healing
  • !Activation of herpes simplex requiring prophylactic antiviral treatment

Red Flags — Choose a Clinic Safely

  • Provider performs dermabrasion without anaesthesia or pain management
  • Dark skin types not counselled on pigmentation risk
  • No anti-viral prophylaxis prescribed
  • No detailed post-procedure wound care instructions provided
  • Device is not a medical-grade dermabrasion system

Questions to Ask Before Booking

  • Is my skin type safe for dermabrasion, or am I at high risk of pigmentation changes?
  • What depth are you targeting, and how is it controlled?
  • Will I need antiviral medication before and after treatment?
  • What is the full wound care protocol for the first 2 weeks?
  • How does dermabrasion compare to laser resurfacing for my specific concern?
