What Is It?

Dermal fillers are injectable gels — most commonly hyaluronic acid — used to restore volume, smooth folds, and enhance facial contours. They can address nasolabial folds, marionette lines, sunken temples, hollowed cheeks, under-eye troughs, and more. Results are immediate and reversible.

How It Works

Filler is injected via a needle or blunt cannula at the appropriate depth for the target anatomy. A cannula is used for areas like the tear trough and temples where vascular risk is higher. The filler integrates with the tissue, attracting water molecules to maintain its volume.

Realistic Results

Immediate volumisation with results that look most natural at 2–4 weeks once any swelling subsides. Duration ranges from 9 months (lips) to 24 months (deep fillers in the cheeks or temples), depending on the product and area.

Recovery

Mild swelling and bruising for 2–5 days. Cold compresses and arnica cream help. Avoid massaging the area, extreme temperatures, and strenuous exercise for 24 hours.

Risks & Complications

  • !Bruising and swelling at injection sites
  • !Vascular occlusion — the most serious risk, requiring immediate hyaluronidase injection
  • !Tyndall effect (bluish skin tone) from superficial filler placement
  • !Nodule formation or granuloma (rare)
  • !Filler migration over time with repeated treatments

Red Flags — Choose a Clinic Safely

  • Injector does not have hyaluronidase on hand
  • Filler brand cannot be identified or is not registered for cosmetic use
  • No vascular anatomy knowledge demonstrated by the provider
  • Pressure to add large volumes in a single session
  • No consent form or medical history intake before treatment

Questions to Ask Before Booking

  • What filler brand and concentration are you using for each area?
  • Do you have hyaluronidase immediately available?
  • Will you use a needle or cannula, and why?
  • How do you assess when the treatment has reached the right volume?
  • What is your protocol if I experience pain, blanching, or discolouration after injection?
