What Is It?

Dermaplaning uses a sterile surgical scalpel to gently scrape the surface of the skin, removing dead skin cells and vellus hair (peach fuzz) in a single, painless treatment. It leaves the skin smooth, bright, and ready to absorb topical products more effectively. It is suitable for all skin types except active acne.

How It Works

The practitioner holds the skin taut and uses a #10 blade at a 45-degree angle, making short strokes across the skin surface. Both the epidermal layer of dead cells and fine vellus hair are removed. The procedure takes 20–30 minutes and requires no anaesthesia.

Realistic Results

Immediately smoother, brighter skin. Makeup applies more evenly and topical products penetrate more effectively. Results last 3–4 weeks as new skin cells replace the exfoliated ones and hair grows back. There is no evidence that vellus hair grows back darker or coarser.

Recovery

No downtime. Mild sensitivity for 24 hours. Sun protection is important as the outer protective layer has been removed. Makeup can be applied the same day.

Risks & Complications

  • !Cuts or nicks if technique is improper
  • !Temporary sensitivity to sun
  • !Flare-up of acne if performed over active pustules
  • !The vellus hair will grow back (though not thicker or darker — this is a common myth)

Red Flags — Choose a Clinic Safely

  • Provider is not a trained aesthetician or medical professional
  • Treatment performed over active acne pustules or inflamed skin
  • Provider does not use a sterile, single-use blade for each patient
  • Provider claims dermaplaning prevents vellus hair from returning

Questions to Ask Before Booking

  • Are you using a sterile, single-use blade?
  • Is dermaplaning safe for my skin type and current skin condition?
  • Will the vellus hair grow back differently?
  • How soon can I wear makeup after treatment?
  • Can dermaplaning be combined with a peel or other treatment in the same session?
