What Is It?
A facelift (rhytidectomy) is a surgical procedure that addresses mid-face sagging, deep facial folds, jowls, and neck laxity that cannot be adequately corrected with non-surgical treatments. It repositions and tightens the underlying SMAS (muscle-fascia layer) and removes excess skin for a naturally refreshed, younger-looking appearance.
How It Works
Incisions are typically made at the hairline, around the ear, and behind the ear into the occipital scalp. The surgeon lifts and repositions the deeper SMAS layer, then re-drapes the skin without tension. Excess skin is trimmed and closed with sutures. Liposuction of the neck is commonly performed at the same time.
Realistic Results
A well-performed facelift produces a natural, rested appearance — not a 'pulled' look — and results typically last 8–12 years. The procedure addresses jowls, deep nasolabial folds, neck laxity, and facial volume redistribution simultaneously.
Recovery
Drains may be placed for 24–48 hours. Bruising and swelling are significant for 2–3 weeks. Most patients return to social activities in 3–4 weeks. Final results, including scar fading, mature at 3–6 months.
Risks & Complications
- !Haematoma (most common complication — requires drainage)
- !Scar visibility particularly behind the ear
- !Nerve injury causing temporary or permanent facial weakness
- !Hairline distortion if incisions are placed incorrectly
- !Skin loss (rare, higher risk in smokers)
- !Changes in earlobe position or shape
Red Flags — Choose a Clinic Safely
- ⚑Surgeon does not discuss the SMAS layer or skin-only tightening
- ⚑No mention of smoking cessation as a requirement before surgery
- ⚑Clinic does not have emergency haematoma drainage capability
- ⚑Aggressive marketing promising you will look 20 years younger
- ⚑Surgeon cannot explain where your scars will be positioned

- How do you avoid the 'operated' or overly tight look?
- Is neck liposuction or a neck lift included?
- What is your haematoma rate, and how is it managed?
- How many facelifts do you perform annually?
- Do I need to stop smoking, and for how long before and after surgery?
