What Is It?
Gynecomastia is the enlargement of breast tissue in men, caused by an imbalance between oestrogen and testosterone. It is common at puberty (usually resolves), with medications, or due to weight gain. True gynecomastia involves glandular breast tissue, which cannot be removed by exercise or diet alone — surgery is the definitive treatment.
How It Works
Treatment depends on composition: glandular tissue is excised through a periareolar incision, while fatty tissue is removed by liposuction. Most cases involve both components (mixed gynecomastia) requiring a combination of excision and liposuction. A compression vest is worn after surgery.
Realistic Results
A flat, male-contoured chest. Results are permanent if the underlying cause is addressed. If the cause (medication, hormone imbalance) is not resolved, gynecomastia can recur.
Recovery
Compression vest worn for 4–6 weeks. Return to desk work in 3–5 days. No vigorous exercise for 4–6 weeks. Mild bruising and firmness for 2–4 weeks.
Risks & Complications
- !Contour irregularity or saucer deformity if too much tissue is removed
- !Inversion of the nipple-areola complex if excessive tissue is excised
- !Changes in nipple sensation
- !Seroma or haematoma under the chest skin
- !Asymmetry between the two sides
Red Flags — Choose a Clinic Safely
- ⚑Surgeon performs liposuction only for glandular gynecomastia (glandular tissue cannot be suctioned)
- ⚑No endocrine assessment or hormone testing recommended before surgery
- ⚑Surgeon does not assess for underlying causes of gynecomastia
- ⚑No pre-operative determination of whether tissue is glandular, fatty, or mixed
Questions to Ask Before Booking
- Have we ruled out hormonal or medication causes of my gynecomastia?
- Is my tissue glandular, fatty, or mixed — and how does that change the technique?
- How do you prevent the saucer deformity from over-resection?
- Where will the incision be, and will it be visible?
- If the cause of my gynecomastia is not resolved, will it return?
