What Is It?

FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) or strip method involves removing a linear strip of scalp from the donor area, dissecting it into individual follicular unit grafts, and transplanting them into the recipient zone. It allows a high number of grafts in a single session and leaves a linear donor scar hidden by surrounding hair.

How It Works

A strip of scalp (typically 15–20 cm long, 1–1.5 cm wide) is excised from the mid-donor area under local anaesthesia. The wound is closed with trichophytic closure to minimise scar visibility. Technicians dissect the strip into individual grafts under stereoscopic microscopes, which are then implanted into the recipient area.

Realistic Results

High graft yield per session — often 2,500–4,000 grafts. The transplanted hair grows permanently. Final results visible at 12–18 months. The linear scar becomes a thin white line covered by surrounding hair at normal length.

Recovery

Sutures or staples are removed at 10–14 days. The donor area should not be stretched or stressed. Some tightness at the back of the scalp for 2–4 weeks is normal.

Risks & Complications

  • !Visible linear scar if hair is worn very short
  • !Stretch-back or widening of the scar over time
  • !Temporary donor area numbness
  • !Shock loss of existing hair
  • !Nerve injury in the donor strip area (rare)

Red Flags — Choose a Clinic Safely

  • Surgeon plans an excessively wide or poorly positioned strip that will be difficult to close invisibly
  • No trichophytic closure technique used to minimise scar visibility
  • Surgeon does not discuss scar visibility for patients who keep their hair short
  • Strip is not dissected under magnification, reducing graft quality

Questions to Ask Before Booking

  • What closure technique will you use for the donor incision?
  • How wide will the strip be, and what determines that?
  • Will the scar be visible if I cut my hair short?
  • What is the graft count estimate for my recipient area need?
  • Can I see the scar result on previous patients at 12 months?
