What Is It?
Hymenoplasty is a surgical procedure that reconstructs the hymen, either by suturing existing hymenal remnants back together or by using a small flap of vaginal mucosa. The procedure is performed for personal, cultural, or religious reasons and is a sensitive procedure requiring non-judgmental care.
How It Works
Under local anaesthesia, the remaining hymenal tissue is identified and approximated using fine absorbable sutures, or a thin flap of tissue from the vaginal wall is used to reconstruct the ring. The procedure takes 30–45 minutes and is performed on an outpatient basis.
Realistic Results
Reconstruction of the hymenal ring, though the outcome is variable depending on the amount of remaining tissue. The procedure is typically performed 1–4 weeks before a specific date to ensure adequate healing.
Recovery
No sexual activity for 6–8 weeks or until after the anticipated event. Mild discomfort for a few days. Routine activities can resume within 24–48 hours.
Risks & Complications
- !Partial wound breakdown before full healing
- !Results may vary based on remaining tissue availability
- !Psychological considerations that the procedure does not address
- !Infection at the repair site

- What is the likelihood of a successful outcome given the tissue available?
- Is anaesthesia included, and will the procedure be completely private?
- What signs of healing should I look for before the expected date?
- Is there a confidentiality policy that covers my consultation and treatment records?
