What Is It?

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) treatment uses broad-spectrum light filtered to specific wavelengths to target chromophores in the skin — melanin (for pigmentation and sun damage) and oxyhaemoglobin (for redness and vascular lesions). It is a versatile treatment for uneven tone, freckles, rosacea, and photoageing.

How It Works

A handheld device delivers high-intensity pulses of light to the skin surface. The light is absorbed by target chromophores and converted to heat, destroying the target (pigment cells or blood vessel walls) without damaging surrounding tissue. A cool gel protects the skin surface during treatment.

Realistic Results

Significant improvement in sunspots, freckles, redness, and overall skin evenness after a course of 3–5 sessions. Pigmented spots darken and shed as crusts within 7–10 days. Redness and thread veins reduce progressively.

Recovery

Mild redness and swelling for 24–48 hours. Pigmented spots darken and exfoliate over 7–14 days. Sun protection is essential during and after the course.

Risks & Complications

  • !Burns or blistering if settings are too aggressive for the patient's skin tone
  • !Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation in darker skin types
  • !Eye injury if eye protection is not worn
  • !Blister formation in very photosensitive patients

Red Flags — Choose a Clinic Safely

  • IPL used on darker skin types (Fitzpatrick IV–VI) without appropriate filters or reduced settings
  • No eye protection used during treatment
  • Sun exposure not properly assessed before treatment (recently tanned skin increases burn risk)
  • Device is not a medical-grade IPL system

Questions to Ask Before Booking

  • What specific concerns are you targeting with IPL?
  • How many sessions will I need?
  • What sun protection protocol is required before and after each session?
  • Can I combine IPL with other treatments?
