What Is It?
Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that reduces or reshapes the labia minora (inner lips) or labia majora (outer lips) of the vulva. Patients may seek it for physical discomfort caused by enlarged labia, for aesthetic reasons, or a combination of both. It is one of the most commonly performed female genital cosmetic surgeries.
How It Works
Two main techniques are used: the trim method removes the excess tissue along the edge of the labia, and the wedge method removes a V-shaped segment from the thickest part of the labia to preserve the natural edge. Absorbable sutures are used and the recovery is straightforward.
Realistic Results
Reduced labia size with a smoother, more comfortable appearance. Physical discomfort during exercise, tight clothing, or sexual activity is typically resolved. Results are permanent.
Recovery
No sexual intercourse, tampon use, or vigorous exercise for 6 weeks. Swelling peaks at days 3–5 and largely resolves by 3–4 weeks. Patients can return to desk work in 3–5 days. Cold compresses and loose clothing help during the first week.
