What Is It?
Laser hair removal uses targeted laser energy to selectively destroy hair follicles, providing long-lasting reduction in hair regrowth. Multiple sessions are required because the laser only effectively treats hairs in the anagen (active growth) phase, which is only a portion of follicles at any one time.
How It Works
The laser emits a wavelength selectively absorbed by melanin in the hair follicle. The heat destroys the follicle's ability to regrow while leaving surrounding skin intact. Diode, Alexandrite, and Nd:YAG lasers are the main types, each suited to different skin types. Nd:YAG is the safest for darker skin tones.
Realistic Results
80–90% permanent hair reduction after a full course of 6–8 sessions. Residual hair is typically finer and lighter. Touch-up sessions every 1–2 years maintain the result. Hormonal hair (chin, upper lip in women with PCOS) may require more frequent maintenance.
Recovery
No downtime. The skin may appear red and feel warm for a few hours. Avoiding sun exposure and deodorant for 24 hours post-underarm treatment is advised.
Risks & Complications
- !Burns or blistering if the wrong device or settings are used for the patient's skin tone
- !PIH — particularly with darker skin types and incorrect wavelength
- !Paradoxical hypertrichosis (more hair growth) — rare, more common on the face
- !Temporary skin lightening at the treatment site
Red Flags — Choose a Clinic Safely
- ⚑Diode or Alexandrite laser used on Fitzpatrick V–VI skin (Nd:YAG is required)
- ⚑Tanned or recently sun-exposed skin treated without postponing to a safer date
- ⚑No test patch performed before the first full treatment
- ⚑Off-brand device with unverifiable safety credentials
