What Is It?
Lip fillers use hyaluronic acid injections to add volume, improve shape, and define the borders of the lips. They are among the most popular non-surgical aesthetic treatments, offering a natural-looking enhancement that can be tailored precisely to the patient's proportions and desired outcome.
How It Works
A hyaluronic acid filler is injected at multiple points throughout the lips — into the body for volume, along the vermillion border for definition, and into the cupid's bow for shape. A dental block or topical anaesthesia is used to minimise discomfort. The total treatment takes 20–30 minutes.
Realistic Results
Immediately fuller, better-defined lips that look and feel soft and natural. Results last 6–12 months depending on the filler density and individual metabolism. Gradual dissolving means lips return to their original state rather than deflating suddenly.
Recovery
Mild swelling and bruising for 2–5 days are normal. Ice packs help reduce swelling in the first 24 hours. Avoid extreme heat (saunas, steam rooms) and strenuous exercise for 24 hours.
Risks & Complications
- !Bruising and temporary swelling
- !Lumpy or uneven lips if filler is not massaged correctly
- !Vascular occlusion — rare but can cause lip tissue loss if untreated
- !Tyndall effect (bluish discolouration) if placed too superficially
- !Filler migration causing blurring of the lip border over time
Red Flags — Choose a Clinic Safely
- ⚑Injector does not have hyaluronidase immediately available
- ⚑No discussion of your existing lip anatomy before treatment
- ⚑Pressure to inject more than 1ml in your first session
- ⚑No topical anaesthetic or nerve block offered for comfort
- ⚑Surgeon uses unnamed or imported filler of unknown quality
Questions to Ask Before Booking

- Can you show me before-and-after photos of patients with a similar starting lip shape?
- How do you address natural asymmetry between the upper and lower lip?
- What will my lips look like as the filler gradually dissolves?
