What Is It?

LLLT (low-level laser therapy) for hair is the same as laser hair therapy — the use of red-light laser or LED devices to stimulate hair follicles, reduce inflammation, and slow pattern hair loss. Home-use devices such as laser caps and helmets have FDA clearance and make LLLT accessible as a regular maintenance treatment.

How It Works

Red-light photons at 630–670nm are absorbed by mitochondria in hair follicle cells, increasing cellular metabolism and reducing apoptosis (cell death). This extends the anagen (growth) phase and reduces the effects of DHT-induced follicular miniaturisation over time.

Realistic Results

Modest improvement in hair density and significant reduction in shedding with consistent 3-times-weekly use over 6+ months. Works best in combination with minoxidil, finasteride, or as a post-hair-transplant maintenance treatment.

Recovery

No recovery required. The treatment is pain-free and non-invasive.

Risks & Complications

  • !Minimal clinical risks
  • !Requires long-term commitment — stopping treatment reverses gains within 3–6 months
  • !Home devices vary greatly in quality and energy output
  • !Results will not impress patients with advanced hair loss where follicles are no longer viable

Red Flags — Choose a Clinic Safely

  • Clinic offers only in-clinic LLLT without option for home maintenance device
  • Device claimed to be equivalent to surgical hair restoration
  • No discussion of complementary treatments (finasteride, minoxidil) alongside LLLT
  • Device specifications (wavelength, energy density) cannot be provided

Questions to Ask Before Booking

  • What wavelength and energy density does your device use?
  • Is this FDA cleared specifically for hair growth?
  • Should I also take finasteride or minoxidil?
  • How will we assess whether the treatment is working for me?
  • Can I use a home device to supplement in-clinic treatments?
