What Is It?

Microneedling (collagen induction therapy) uses a device with fine needles to create controlled microchannels in the skin, triggering the body's wound-healing response and stimulating collagen and elastin production. It addresses fine lines, acne scars, large pores, uneven texture, and skin laxity.

How It Works

After topical numbing cream, the microneedling device — either a pen-type (Dermapen, SkinPen) or roller — is passed over the skin at a controlled depth (0.5–2.5mm depending on the concern). The microinjuries stimulate fibroblasts to produce new collagen. Topical serums can be simultaneously delivered through the open channels.

Realistic Results

Progressive improvement in skin texture, scar appearance, and overall quality over 3–6 months following a course of 3–6 treatments. Collagen remodelling continues for up to 12 months post-treatment. Results are gradual, not immediate.

Recovery

24–48 hours of redness and mild sensitivity, similar to mild sunburn. The skin is more porous for 24 hours post-treatment — avoid makeup and active skincare ingredients (acids, retinol). Sun protection is essential.

Risks & Complications

  • !Temporary redness and sensitivity (expected)
  • !Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation in darker skin types if treated too aggressively
  • !Activation of herpes simplex (cold sores) in susceptible patients
  • !Infection if sterile technique is not maintained
  • !Device-related injury if needle depth is excessive

Red Flags — Choose a Clinic Safely

  • Provider uses a non-sterile dermaroller rather than a medical-grade disposable needle cartridge
  • Active acne, infection, or rosacea not assessed or excluded before treatment
  • No sun protection advice given
  • No anti-viral prophylaxis offered for patients with a history of cold sores

Questions to Ask Before Booking

  • What device and needle depth do you use for my concern?
  • Is the needle cartridge single-use and sterile?
  • How many sessions will I need for my specific skin goals?
  • Should I take antivirals if I have had cold sores before?
  • What active skincare products should I avoid before and after treatment?
