What Is It?

Mole removal is a minor surgical procedure to excise benign or suspicious moles (melanocytic naevi) from the skin. All removed moles should be sent for histopathological examination to rule out malignancy. Removal methods include surgical excision, shave excision, and laser removal (only for confirmed benign lesions).

How It Works

Under local anaesthesia, the mole and a margin of surrounding tissue are removed either by full excision (elliptical incision, sutured closure) or shave excision (blade slicing, no sutures). Laser ablation vaporises the mole superficially without providing tissue for pathology, and should not be used for any mole that has not been assessed as definitively benign.

Realistic Results

Complete removal with a fine scar at the site. Excision scars fade over 12–24 months. The pathology result provides definitive assessment of the mole — critical for patient safety.

Recovery

No downtime. A plaster dressing for 5–7 days. Sutures removed at 5–14 days depending on location. Sun protection over the scar for 12 months.

Risks & Complications

  • !Scar at the removal site
  • !Incomplete removal if margins are not clear
  • !Hypertrophic or keloid scar in susceptible patients
  • !Surgical site infection

Red Flags — Choose a Clinic Safely

  • Moles are removed by laser without first being clinically or dermoscopically assessed for malignancy
  • Clinic does not send removed tissue for histopathological analysis
  • Removal of a changing, irregular, or symptomatic mole without referral for specialist assessment first
  • Provider cannot perform a dermoscopic assessment

Questions to Ask Before Booking

  • Will the removed mole be sent for pathological examination?
  • Have you assessed this mole dermoscopically before deciding on removal?
  • If the pathology returns with atypical cells, what is the next step?
  • What will the scar look like and how long to fade?
  • Do I need any follow-up skin checks after the removal?
