What Is It?

A penile implant (penile prosthesis) is a medical device surgically placed inside the penis to enable erections in men with erectile dysfunction that has not responded to medication or other treatments. There are two main types: malleable (semi-rigid) rods and inflatable (multi-component) devices.

How It Works

Under general or spinal anaesthesia, the natural erectile tissue (corpora cavernosa) is dilated and the implant cylinders are placed inside. For an inflatable implant, a reservoir is placed in the abdomen or pelvis and a pump in the scrotum that the patient activates to inflate or deflate the device.

Realistic Results

Reliable, on-demand erections. Patient and partner satisfaction rates exceed 90% in clinical studies. Natural erections are no longer possible once the corpora are surgically dilated for implant placement, so this is an irreversible procedure.

Recovery

Return to sexual activity in 4–6 weeks. Mild swelling and discomfort for 2–3 weeks. Activation of the pump mechanism is taught during a post-operative consultation.

Risks & Complications

  • !Infection — the most common serious complication; requires implant removal
  • !Mechanical failure of the device over time (most devices last 10–15 years)
  • !Scrotal haematoma
  • !Changes in penile length (some shortening compared to natural erection)
  • !Autoinflagton or difficulty operating the pump

Red Flags — Choose a Clinic Safely

  • Procedure recommended without exhausting non-surgical treatment options (medication, vacuum devices, injections)
  • No complete assessment of the cause of erectile dysfunction before surgery
  • Implant brand or type not discussed
  • Surgeon does not have urology or andrology credentials
  • No mention that natural erections will no longer be possible

Questions to Ask Before Booking

  • Have all non-surgical treatments for erectile dysfunction been tried first?
  • What type of implant are you recommending — malleable or inflatable?
  • What is your infection rate with this procedure?
  • How long do these devices typically last before needing replacement?
  • What happens to erection quality after the implant is removed or replaced?
