What Is It?
Radiofrequency skin tightening uses electrical energy to heat the dermis and subcutaneous layers to stimulate collagen contraction and new collagen production. It addresses mild to moderate skin laxity on the face, neck, and body without surgery, and is suitable for all skin types.
How It Works
RF energy is delivered via a handpiece that heats the dermis to 40–45°C. The heat denatures existing collagen, causing immediate contraction, and stimulates fibroblasts to produce new collagen over the following 3–6 months. Popular devices include Thermage, Venus Freeze, Exilis, and Profound RF.
Realistic Results
Gradual tightening and lifting over 3–6 months after treatment. A single session (Thermage) or a course of 6–10 sessions (Venus Freeze, Exilis) depending on the device. Results last 1–2 years with optimal maintenance.
Recovery
Minimal for surface RF devices — mild redness for a few hours. Deeper RF treatments (Profound, Thermi) have 3–5 days of swelling and redness.
Risks & Complications
- !Burns if the device is held stationary or settings are too aggressive
- !Uneven heating causing patchy results
- !Under-treatment if energy is too low to reach the target depth
- !Limited efficacy for significant skin laxity requiring surgery
Red Flags — Choose a Clinic Safely
- ⚑Provider claims RF tightening is equivalent to a facelift
- ⚑Off-brand device with unverifiable energy output
- ⚑No skin preparation or pain management for high-intensity RF treatments
- ⚑Device cannot be identified — 'generic RF' without brand credentials
Questions to Ask Before Booking
- What specific RF device will you use, and what evidence supports its efficacy?
- Is my degree of skin laxity appropriate for RF, or am I a better surgical candidate?
- How many sessions are in the protocol?
- How do you monitor the skin temperature during treatment to ensure safety?
- When should I see results, and how long will they last?
