What Is It?

Scalp micropigmentation (SMP) is a non-surgical procedure that uses specialised tattooing to deposit pigment into the scalp dermis, creating the illusion of hair follicles or a shaved head appearance. It is suitable for patients with hair loss at any stage, those with scars, or those wanting to create the appearance of a fuller, denser head of hair.

How It Works

A practitioner uses an electric needle to deposit tiny dots of pigment into the upper dermis of the scalp, replicating the natural appearance of hair follicle cross-sections. The technique, ink formulation, and needle size are specific to SMP — regular tattooing ink and equipment are not appropriate.

Realistic Results

A realistic, low-maintenance appearance of short, shaved hair or increased density. Results last 3–6 years before requiring a touch-up as pigment gradually fades. The look is natural when performed by an experienced practitioner.

Recovery

No downtime. Minor redness of the scalp for 24–48 hours. Patients should avoid washing the scalp and sweating for 4–5 days after each session. A course of 2–4 sessions is required.

Risks & Complications

  • !Fading or colour shift (turning grey or blue) if incorrect pigment is used
  • !Unnatural appearance if follicle dots are too large or regularly spaced
  • !Allergic reaction to the pigment
  • !Infection if sterile technique is not maintained
  • !Difficulty correcting unsatisfactory work — requires laser removal

Red Flags — Choose a Clinic Safely

  • Practitioner uses standard tattoo equipment and ink rather than SMP-specific tools
  • Dots are applied too large, creating an artificial scattered freckle appearance
  • No colour matching discussion for your skin tone and natural hair colour
  • Single session offered for the full head (multiple sessions are required for natural graduation)

Questions to Ask Before Booking

  • Do you use SMP-specific needles, machines, and pigments?
  • How do you select the pigment shade to match my skin tone and hair colour?
  • How many sessions will I need, and what does each session add?
  • What does touch-up look like in 3–5 years as it fades?
  • Can you show me before-and-after images of patients with a similar skin tone and hair loss pattern?
