What Is It?
Sculptra (poly-L-lactic acid, or PLLA) is an injectable biostimulator that gradually restores facial volume by stimulating the skin's own collagen production. Unlike hyaluronic acid fillers, Sculptra works progressively — results develop over 3–6 months as new collagen builds in the treated areas.
How It Works
Reconstituted PLLA microparticles are injected into the deep dermis or subcutaneous layer in the temples, cheeks, and jawline. The microparticles act as a scaffold, triggering a controlled inflammatory response that leads to fibroblast activation and new collagen deposition around the injected particles.
Realistic Results
Gradual, natural-looking volume restoration and skin thickening that develops over 3–6 months. Results last 2 years or more. Most patients need 2–3 treatment sessions. Unlike HA fillers, results cannot be dissolved — they diminish naturally as collagen turnover occurs.
Recovery
Swelling and injection-site redness for 24–48 hours. Patients must massage the treated area firmly for 5 minutes, 5 times a day for 5 days ('5-5-5 rule') to ensure the product distributes evenly and prevent nodule formation.
Risks & Complications
- !Subcutaneous papules or nodules if the product is not injected correctly or massaged properly
- !Uneven results if one area receives more product than another
- !Delayed onset makes correction difficult
- !Results cannot be reversed with hyaluronidase
- !Tissue inflammation around the PLLA microparticles
Red Flags — Choose a Clinic Safely
- ⚑Provider does not explain the 5-5-5 massage protocol
- ⚑Product is used undiluted or incorrectly reconstituted
- ⚑Provider uses Sculptra to add immediate volume (this is not how it works — it is a collagen stimulator, not a filler)
- ⚑No follow-up appointments planned to assess progressive results
- ⚑Provider cannot explain the difference between Sculptra and standard HA fillers
Questions to Ask Before Booking
- How will you dilute and reconstitute the Sculptra before injection?
- What massage protocol do I need to follow after treatment?
- How many vials and sessions will I need to achieve my goal?
- When will I first notice a visible difference?
- What happens if I develop a nodule?
