What Is It?
Stretch marks (striae) are scars in the dermis caused by rapid skin stretching during growth, pregnancy, or significant weight change. Recent red/purple stretch marks (striae rubrae) respond better to treatment than mature white ones (striae albae). No treatment fully eliminates stretch marks, but appearance can be significantly improved.
How It Works
Treatment options include fractional CO2 laser (most effective), RF microneedling (safer for darker skin), chemical peels, microneedling, and topical retinoids. Fractional laser creates channels in the scar tissue, stimulating new collagen within the stretch mark. Red stretch marks respond particularly well because the vasculature is still active.
Realistic Results
A 40–70% improvement in the appearance of stretch marks is achievable with consistent treatment. Red stretch marks improve more rapidly. Mature white marks improve in texture but complete colour normalisation is not always possible.
Recovery
Fractional laser: 5–7 days of redness and mild crusting. RF microneedling: 2–3 days of redness. Topical: no downtime.
Risks & Complications
- !PIH in darker skin types after laser treatment
- !Burns if laser settings are too aggressive
- !Minimal improvement from topical treatments alone for established stretch marks
Red Flags — Choose a Clinic Safely
- ⚑Provider promises complete elimination of stretch marks
- ⚑Fractional laser used on dark skin without adjusted settings or test patch
- ⚑Very new stretch marks treated aggressively without trialling topical treatment first
