What Is It?
Laser tattoo removal uses Q-switched or picosecond lasers to break down tattoo ink particles into fragments small enough for the immune system to clear. Multiple sessions are required, and complete removal is achievable for most tattoos with the appropriate laser and enough sessions.
How It Works
Short, powerful laser pulses shatter tattoo ink particles through a photoacoustic effect. The immune system then clears the fragmented particles over 6–8 weeks between sessions. Multiple wavelengths target different ink colours — 1064nm removes black and dark blue ink, 532nm removes red, 694nm/755nm removes green and blue.
Realistic Results
Progressive fading with each session. Professional tattoos require 8–15+ sessions; amateur tattoos typically 3–8 sessions. Certain ink colours (yellow, white) are the most resistant. Complete clearance is achievable for most tattoos given sufficient sessions.
Recovery
Redness, swelling, and occasional blistering for 3–7 days after each session. The skin must be kept clean and protected from sun. Frosting (a white reaction) immediately after laser is normal and resolves within hours.
Risks & Complications
- !Blistering and temporary open skin requiring careful wound care
- !PIH, particularly in darker skin types
- !Hypopigmentation (white patches) at the treatment site — risk increases with too many sessions too close together
- !Incomplete ink removal if the correct wavelengths are not available for all colours
- !Scarring from incorrect settings or inadequate wound care
Red Flags — Choose a Clinic Safely
- ⚑Clinic only offers a single wavelength (cannot treat all ink colours)
- ⚑Sessions spaced too closely (minimum 6–8 weeks between sessions is required for clearance)
- ⚑Poor wound care advice after sessions that result in infection
- ⚑Off-brand Q-switched device without calibrated output
Questions to Ask Before Booking
- What wavelengths are available, and can you treat all the colours in my tattoo?
- How many sessions do you estimate for my specific tattoo?
- What is the session spacing, and why is that important?
- What wound care do I need between sessions?
- Is there a risk of permanent skin changes such as white patches?
