What Is It?

Upper blepharoplasty focuses specifically on removing excess skin and fatty tissue from the upper eyelids. As the skin above the eye stretches and droops with age, it can create a heavy, hooded appearance that makes the eyes look tired. In severe cases, the excess skin can obstruct the upper visual field.

How It Works

An incision is carefully placed within the natural upper eyelid crease so the scar is hidden when the eye is open. The surgeon removes a precise strip of redundant skin and, if needed, repositions or excises the underlying fat pads. Sutures close the incision with minimal tension.

Realistic Results

The eyes appear more open, alert, and youthful almost immediately. Peripheral vision improves if hooding was severe. Scars fade to near invisibility in the eyelid crease within 3–6 months. Results typically last 8–12 years.

Recovery

Bruising and swelling peak at days 2–3 and largely resolve within 10 days. Sutures are removed at day 5–7. Patients can usually resume desk work within a week and wear makeup after 14 days.

Risks & Complications

  • !Asymmetry in lid height or crease position
  • !Over-resection causing an unnatural hollow appearance
  • !Difficulty closing the eye fully (lagophthalmos)
  • !Scarring outside the crease if incision placement is incorrect
  • !Dry or irritated eyes during healing

Red Flags — Choose a Clinic Safely

  • Surgeon does not measure the amount of skin to be removed with calipers or markings
  • No assessment of eyelid closure strength before surgery
  • Clinic bundles upper with lower blepharoplasty without examining whether both are needed
  • No pre-operative photos taken for comparison

Questions to Ask Before Booking

  • How much skin are you planning to remove, and how did you determine that amount?
  • Is my drooping caused by excess skin, brow descent, or both?
  • Would a brow lift address my concern better than or alongside blepharoplasty?
  • What is your approach to preserving the upper eyelid fat pad?
