What Is It?
An arm lift (brachioplasty) removes excess, sagging skin from the upper arms — the 'bat wing' appearance — that develops after significant weight loss or with ageing. It is a body contouring procedure that tightens and reshapes the upper arm from the armpit to the elbow.
How It Works
An incision is made along the inner upper arm from the armpit toward the elbow. Excess skin is removed, the underlying tissues are tightened, and the remaining skin is re-draped and sutured. Liposuction may be combined to remove residual fat. The scar runs along the inner arm where it is least visible.
Realistic Results
A significantly slimmer, tighter upper arm contour. Results are permanent with weight stability. The scar runs along the inner aspect of the arm and fades to a fine line over 12–24 months, though it remains visible in some patients.
Recovery
Drains may be placed for 24–48 hours. Compression garments are worn for 4–6 weeks. Arms are kept elevated where possible. Return to desk work in 7–10 days; heavy lifting and exercise after 6 weeks.
Risks & Complications
- !Visible scar along the inner arm
- !Wound healing delay, particularly in the axilla
- !Seroma or haematoma
- !Temporary numbness of the inner arm
- !Scar hypertrophy in patients prone to keloids
Red Flags — Choose a Clinic Safely
- ⚑Surgeon does not discuss scar visibility as the primary trade-off
- ⚑No pre-operative assessment for keloid or hypertrophic scarring tendency
- ⚑Surgeon recommends an arm lift for patients with only mild laxity where skin tightening treatments may be sufficient
- ⚑No mention of scar management protocol
Questions to Ask Before Booking
- Where exactly will the scar run, and can I see how it looks on previous patients?
- Is my skin laxity significant enough to justify the scar, or could a non-surgical treatment address it?
- Will liposuction be included?
- What scar management protocol do you recommend after healing?
- How do you manage the scar in the armpit area where healing can be delayed?
