What Is It?
The Brazilian butt lift (BBL) combines liposuction of the flanks, abdomen, and back with fat transfer to the buttocks to simultaneously slim the waist and add volume and projection to the buttocks. It uses the patient's own fat, so there is no implant and no risk of rejection.
How It Works
Fat is harvested from multiple donor sites using liposuction, centrifuged to remove blood and fluid, and then injected into the buttocks. Fat is injected only into the subcutaneous layer — injecting into the muscle increases the risk of fat embolism and is no longer considered safe practice.
Realistic Results
A more lifted, rounder, and projected buttock appearance alongside a slimmer waist and flanks. Approximately 60–70% of transferred fat survives long-term. Final shape is visible at 3–6 months once swelling resolves and fat integrates.
Recovery
Patients must avoid sitting or lying directly on the buttocks for 2–6 weeks using a BBL pillow to protect the transferred fat. Compression garments are worn for 6 weeks. Return to work (in a standing or pillow-supported position) at 2 weeks.
