What Is It?
Blepharoplasty is eyelid surgery that removes excess skin, fat, and sometimes muscle from the upper or lower eyelids. It addresses drooping upper lids that can impair vision, and puffy lower lids or under-eye bags that create a tired appearance. It is one of the most commonly performed facial surgeries worldwide.
How It Works
For upper blepharoplasty, an incision is made in the natural eyelid crease, and excess skin and fat are removed or repositioned. For lower blepharoplasty, the incision is placed just below the lash line or inside the eyelid (transconjunctival). The skin is then closed with fine sutures, leaving minimal visible scarring.
Realistic Results
The eyes appear more open, refreshed, and youthful. Upper lid surgery can also improve peripheral vision in patients with significant hooding. Results are long-lasting — typically 10–15 years — though natural ageing continues.
Recovery
Bruising and swelling are most pronounced in the first 3–5 days. Cold compresses and head elevation help. Sutures are removed at 5–7 days. Most patients feel comfortable returning to public within 10–14 days. Eye makeup can be worn after 2 weeks.
Risks & Complications
- !Bruising and temporary swelling
- !Dry eyes or altered tear production (usually temporary)
- !Asymmetry between the two eyelids
- !Scarring at incision lines
- !Rare risk of ectropion (lower lid pulling away from the eye)
- !Very rarely: temporary or permanent change in vision
Red Flags — Choose a Clinic Safely
- ⚑Surgeon does not assess your vision or eye health before surgery
- ⚑No mention of dry eye as a contraindication
- ⚑Clinic does not have ophthalmic assessment available
- ⚑Pressure to correct all four eyelids when you only need two
- ⚑No detailed marking or measurement before the procedure
Questions to Ask Before Booking
- Will you treat upper lids, lower lids, or both — and what is the reasoning?
- How will you preserve the natural eyelid crease and shape?
- Is there a risk this will worsen my existing dry eye symptoms?
- Where exactly will the scars be, and how will they appear at 6 and 12 months?
- What can I do if I am unhappy with asymmetry after healing?
