What Is It?

A body lift is a broad surgical term for procedures that remove excess skin and fat from large areas of the body after significant weight loss. It can be limited to the lower body (lower body lift) or combined with an upper body lift for total body transformation. It addresses skin folds, contour irregularities, and hygiene issues caused by hanging skin.

How It Works

Depending on the extent of excess skin, incisions are strategically placed to remove redundant tissue from the abdomen, back, buttocks, outer thighs, arms, and chest. The remaining skin is tightened and sutured under tension with careful wound closure techniques to minimise scar visibility.

Realistic Results

A dramatically improved body contour, reduced skin fold and rash problems, and improved mobility and confidence. Results are permanent if the patient maintains their weight. Scars are extensive but positioned in areas hidden by clothing.

Recovery

Extended recovery of 6–12 weeks depending on extent of surgery. Multiple surgical stages may be required. Full return to active lifestyle in 3–4 months.

Risks & Complications

  • !All risks of major surgery including haematoma, seroma, infection, and thromboembolic events
  • !Extensive scarring
  • !Wound dehiscence, particularly at areas of high tension
  • !Asymmetry
  • !Protracted recovery and potential need for revision

Red Flags — Choose a Clinic Safely

  • Surgeon proposes performing all areas in one very long operation without discussing the safety of extended surgical time
  • Weight has not been stable for at least 12 months
  • No multidisciplinary medical clearance for major surgery
  • Surgeon underrepresents the recovery time or scar extent

Questions to Ask Before Booking

  • Will this be done in stages, or all at once — and what are the safety considerations?
  • What is the total scar length and location for the areas being addressed?
  • How do you manage nutrition and healing after such extensive surgery?
  • Am I medically fit for this procedure, and what tests are required beforehand?
  • What is your protocol for post-operative complication management?
