What Is It?
Botulinum toxin (of which Botox is the most recognised brand) is used medically and cosmetically to relax muscles. In aesthetics, it reduces dynamic facial lines, and is also used therapeutically for excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), teeth grinding (bruxism), gummy smiles, and neck tightening (Nefertiti lift).
How It Works
Botulinum toxin is injected in very small doses at precise points into the target muscle or gland. It blocks acetylcholine release at the neuromuscular junction, preventing muscle contraction or gland secretion. Multiple injection points may be used within the same session depending on the treatment area.
Realistic Results
Smooth, relaxed treatment areas with results lasting 3–5 months. Therapeutic indications like hyperhidrosis can last 6–9 months. The effect gradually wears off as the body forms new neuromuscular connections.
Recovery
No downtime for facial treatments. Injections may cause a mild weal (small bump) that resolves within the hour. Patients should avoid manipulating the area for 4–6 hours and strenuous activity for 24 hours.
Risks & Complications

- !Temporary muscle weakness in adjacent areas if product migrates
- !Difficulty swallowing if used near the neck (rare with cosmetic dosing)
- !Resistance to the toxin developing with very frequent treatments
- !Flu-like symptoms occasionally reported on the day of treatment
