What Is It?
A breast lift (mastopexy) raises and reshapes sagging breasts by removing excess skin and repositioning the nipple-areola complex to a higher, more forward position. It does not significantly increase volume — patients who also want fullness typically combine a lift with implants.
How It Works
Depending on the degree of ptosis (sagging), different scar patterns are used: a periareolar (donut) incision for mild ptosis, a vertical (lollipop) scar for moderate ptosis, or an anchor (inverted T) scar for significant sagging. Excess skin is removed and the breast is reshaped around a tightened internal structure.
Realistic Results
Firmer, rounder, perkier breasts with the nipple correctly positioned at the centre of the breast mound. Results last many years but gravity and ageing continue to work. The scar is permanent but fades well over 12–24 months.
Recovery
Sports bra worn continuously for 6 weeks. No vigorous exercise for 4–6 weeks. Return to desk work in 7–10 days. The shape continues to improve over 3–6 months.
Risks & Complications
- !Scarring — the primary trade-off
- !Nipple sensation changes (usually temporary)
- !Asymmetry in breast shape or nipple height
- !Partial skin necrosis at the T-junction of an anchor scar
- !Relapse of ptosis over time, particularly without implants
Red Flags — Choose a Clinic Safely
- ⚑Surgeon recommends a minimal scar approach for significant ptosis (scar trade-off should be honestly presented)
- ⚑No pre-operative breast examination or cancer screening for appropriate patients
- ⚑Patient is advised to wait until they have finished having children — this may be reasonable for some, but should be an informed choice
- ⚑Surgeon does not discuss the option of combining with implants if volume is also a concern
Questions to Ask Before Booking
- What degree of sagging do I have, and which technique and scar pattern is appropriate?
- Will a lift alone achieve my goals, or should I consider implants as well?
- Where will the scars run, and what do they look like at 12 months on patients with my skin type?
- How long will my results last before further sagging occurs?
- How does pregnancy or significant weight change affect the long-term result?
