What Is It?

Buttock implants are solid silicone prostheses placed surgically within or under the gluteal muscles to add permanent volume and projection to flat or asymmetric buttocks. They are an alternative to fat transfer for patients who do not have sufficient donor fat for a BBL.

How It Works

Under general anaesthesia, an incision is made in the intergluteal crease (between the buttocks). The implant is placed either within the gluteus maximus muscle (intramuscular — preferred for stability) or under the muscle (submuscular). The incision is closed in layers.

Realistic Results

Permanent increase in buttock projection and volume. The implant is not affected by body weight changes the way transferred fat is. Results are immediately visible once swelling resolves at 4–6 weeks.

Recovery

Sitting is restricted for 2–3 weeks. A compression garment is worn for 6 weeks. Walking is encouraged from day 1. Full activity resumes at 6–8 weeks. The intergluteal scar fades over 12 months.

Risks & Complications

  • !Implant displacement or malposition
  • !Capsular contracture (scar tissue forming around the implant)
  • !Infection requiring implant removal
  • !Seroma at the implant pocket
  • !Persistent pain or nerve irritation
  • !Scar visibility in the intergluteal crease

Red Flags — Choose a Clinic Safely

  • Surgeon does not explain the difference between intramuscular and submuscular placement
  • No discussion of implant size options with visual aids
  • Surgeon cannot explain their complication management protocol for infection or capsular contracture
  • Implant brand or cohesive silicone specification not disclosed

Questions to Ask Before Booking

  • Will the implants be placed intramuscularly or submuscularly?
  • What implant size, shape, and brand are you recommending?
  • What is the risk of capsular contracture, and how is it managed?
  • How long is the sitting restriction, and how do I manage it practically?
  • If an implant needs to be removed, what does that procedure involve?
