What Is It?
A chemical peel uses an acid solution applied to the skin to exfoliate and remove the outermost skin layers, stimulating new cell growth. Peels range from superficial (lactic, glycolic) to medium-depth (TCA) to deep (phenol), each targeting different skin concerns including uneven tone, fine lines, pigmentation, and scarring.
How It Works
The acid is applied evenly to the skin and left for a timed period before being neutralised or removed. Superficial peels exfoliate the outer epidermis and require no downtime. Medium peels penetrate into the papillary dermis and cause controlled frosting and several days of peeling. Deep peels reach the reticular dermis and require weeks of recovery.
Realistic Results
Improved skin texture, tone, and clarity. Superficial peels require a series of monthly treatments for cumulative improvement. Medium peels show significant improvement in pigmentation and fine lines after one treatment, visible at 4–6 weeks. Deep peels can dramatically reduce lines and pigmentation permanently.
Recovery
Superficial: no downtime, mild redness for 24 hours. Medium: 5–7 days of visible peeling and redness. Deep: 2–4 weeks of raw, weeping skin, strict sun avoidance, and careful wound care.
Risks & Complications
- !Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) in darker skin tones
- !Prolonged redness (erythema) after deeper peels
- !Scarring if technique or patient selection is incorrect
- !Infection during the healing period
- !Permanent skin lightening with deep phenol peels
Red Flags — Choose a Clinic Safely
- ⚑Provider uses high-concentration acids on dark skin types without adjusting strength
- ⚑No patch test or skin preparation protocol before treatment
- ⚑Deep peels offered without proper patient pre-conditioning (retinol, hydroquinone)
- ⚑No sun protection advice given post-treatment
