What Is It?

Cryolipolysis (commercially known as CoolSculpting) uses controlled cooling to freeze and permanently destroy fat cells in localised body areas. The frozen fat cells undergo apoptosis (natural cell death) and are cleared by the body's lymphatic system over 2–4 months. It is a non-surgical, no-downtime fat reduction treatment.

How It Works

A vacuum applicator is placed on the skin over the treatment area. The device cools the tissue to a temperature that destroys fat cells but leaves surrounding skin, nerves, and blood vessels unharmed. The treatment takes 35–60 minutes per applicator. Multiple applicators can be used simultaneously.

Realistic Results

A 20–25% reduction in fat layer thickness in the treated area over 2–4 months. Results are permanent as treated fat cells do not regenerate. Multiple sessions may be needed for further reduction or to treat adjacent areas.

Recovery

No downtime. The area feels numb, sore, and firm for 2–4 weeks. Temporary bruising or redness resolves quickly. Patients can return to all activities immediately.

Risks & Complications

  • !Paradoxical adipose hyperplasia (PAH) — a rare but serious complication where the treated area enlarges rather than shrinks (occurs in approximately 0.0051% of cases but disproportionately in male patients)
  • !Temporary numbness, tingling, or bruising
  • !Skin irregularity in some treatment areas
  • !Frostbite if the applicator is not properly maintained

Red Flags — Choose a Clinic Safely

  • Clinic does not mention the risk of paradoxical adipose hyperplasia
  • Treatment is recommended for patients with skin laxity who would benefit more from surgery
  • Device appears poorly maintained or is an off-brand, unverified copy of the original CoolSculpting system
  • No consultation or assessment of treatment suitability before booking

Questions to Ask Before Booking

  • What device are you using — is it FDA/CE cleared for cryolipolysis?
  • Is paradoxical adipose hyperplasia a risk for me, and how would it be managed?
  • How many sessions do I need for meaningful results in my area of concern?
  • Can you show before-and-after photos of patients with a similar body to mine?
  • Is my concern better addressed by surgery, given the degree of fat I have?
