What Is It?

Dental veneers are thin shells of porcelain or composite resin bonded to the front surface of teeth to improve their colour, shape, size, or alignment. They are a minimally invasive cosmetic dental procedure — most effective for teeth that are discoloured, chipped, worn, or mildly misaligned.

How It Works

For porcelain veneers, a small amount of enamel (0.3–0.7mm) is removed from the tooth surface. An impression is taken and sent to a dental laboratory where the custom veneer is fabricated. A temporary veneer is worn while the permanent one is made. The permanent porcelain veneer is bonded with a light-cured resin cement.

Realistic Results

A natural-looking, dramatically improved smile with uniform colour, shape, and size. Porcelain veneers are highly stain-resistant and last 10–15 years with proper care. Composite veneers last 5–7 years but are more easily repaired.

Recovery

Mild tooth sensitivity for a few days after enamel preparation. No special restrictions, though patients should avoid biting hard objects with veneers.

Risks & Complications

  • !Irreversibility — once enamel is removed, veneers are permanently required
  • !Sensitivity if preparation is too deep
  • !Chipping or cracking if biting forces are excessive
  • !Gum inflammation if margins are not perfectly placed
  • !Colour mismatch with adjacent teeth over time

Red Flags — Choose a Clinic Safely

  • Dentist cannot show a wax-up or digital design before tooth preparation
  • Veneers placed on teeth with active gum disease or decay
  • No discussion of the permanent and irreversible nature of enamel removal
  • All 10–12 front teeth prepared as veneers without clinical necessity

Questions to Ask Before Booking

  • Can I see a wax-up or digital preview of my expected result before any teeth are prepared?
  • Are all the teeth you plan to veneer absolutely necessary, or can some be treated differently?
  • How much enamel will be removed — is there a no-prep or minimal-prep option?
  • How will my bite be assessed before veneers are placed?
  • What is the protocol if a veneer chips or debonds?
