What Is It?

Zirconia crowns and bridges use high-strength zirconium dioxide ceramic, offering an excellent combination of aesthetic appearance and mechanical durability. Zirconia is tooth-coloured, metal-free, and biocompatible, making it the preferred material for highly visible teeth and for patients with metal sensitivities.

How It Works

After tooth preparation, a digital scan is taken and the zirconia restoration is designed using CAD/CAM software. The zirconia block is milled in a precision machine and sintered (hardened) in a furnace to its final density. Monolithic (one-piece) zirconia is extremely strong; layered zirconia is more aesthetic but slightly less durable.

Realistic Results

A natural-looking, highly durable restoration that withstands normal biting forces without the metal grey line at the gum that occurs with porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns. Zirconia crowns last 15–20+ years. They are highly stain-resistant and maintain their colour long-term.

Recovery

Same as standard crowns: mild sensitivity for a few days. Bite adjustments at 1 week are common.

Risks & Complications

  • !Difficulty grinding down zirconia for adjustments (it is very hard)
  • !Higher wear on opposing natural teeth compared to natural enamel
  • !Opaque appearance in some zirconia grades — less translucent than natural enamel
  • !Crown debonding if the bonding agent is not selected correctly

Red Flags — Choose a Clinic Safely

  • Provider uses full-opaque zirconia for highly visible front teeth where translucency matters (layered or high-translucency zirconia is more appropriate)
  • No digital design or wax-up preview before final restoration
  • Zirconia used where a porcelain veneer would be more conservative
  • No bite analysis before placing zirconia on bruxism patients

Questions to Ask Before Booking

  • Will you use monolithic, layered, or high-translucency zirconia — and why is that the best choice for my teeth?
  • Is zirconia appropriate for my position in the mouth (front vs. back teeth)?
  • How will you achieve a colour match with my adjacent teeth?
  • What bonding agent and technique will ensure the crown stays in place?
  • Do I grind my teeth, and if so, how does that affect the choice of material?
