What Is It?
Dimpleplasty is a minor surgical procedure that creates artificial dimples on the cheeks. Natural dimples are caused by a small attachment between the cheek muscle (zygomaticus) and the overlying skin. The procedure mimics this attachment surgically and is growing in popularity as a facial charm feature.
How It Works
Under local anaesthesia, a small incision is made inside the mouth at the site of the desired dimple. A small circular piece of mucosa and fat is removed, and a suture is placed between the cheek muscle and the underside of the skin to create a visible indentation. The suture dissolves over time, but a scar forms that maintains the dimple.
Realistic Results
An immediately visible dimple appears when smiling. During the first few weeks, the dimple may also be visible at rest as the scar matures, but it typically fades to become noticeable only when smiling — mimicking a natural dimple.
Recovery
No downtime is required. Mild swelling inside the cheek resolves in 3–5 days. A soft diet is recommended for 3–5 days and the mouth must be rinsed with antiseptic mouthwash after meals.
Risks & Complications
- !Dimple visible at rest (not only when smiling) if scar is too strong
- !Asymmetry if positioning is uneven
- !Infection inside the mouth
- !Unnatural appearance if placed in the wrong anatomical position
Red Flags — Choose a Clinic Safely
- ⚑Provider does not discuss resting visibility of the dimple
- ⚑Dimple position is not mapped and agreed upon before the procedure
- ⚑Procedure offered as walk-in without a consultation to assess suitability
Questions to Ask Before Booking
- Where exactly will the dimple be positioned, and can I approve the marking?
- Is there a risk the dimple will be visible even when I am not smiling?
- Can the dimple be reversed if I am unhappy with it?
- What aftercare is required for the inside of my mouth?
- How long until I can see the final, natural-looking result?
