What Is It?

The diode laser (800–810nm) is one of the most effective lasers for hair removal in patients with lighter to medium skin tones. It targets melanin in the hair follicle with high absorption, making it highly effective at permanently reducing hair. Newer diode platforms with adjustable pulse durations can treat a wider range of skin types.

How It Works

Diode laser energy is absorbed by melanin in the hair shaft and follicle. The heat travels down the shaft to destroy the follicle bulb and matrix. The 800nm wavelength provides excellent melanin absorption with moderate epidermal melanin competition, making it effective and manageable for Fitzpatrick I–IV skin types.

Realistic Results

80–90% permanent hair reduction after a full course. Efficacy is highest on dark hair against light skin. Fine, blonde, or grey hairs respond poorly as they contain insufficient melanin to absorb the laser.

Recovery

No downtime. Mild redness and warmth for a few hours. Sun avoidance between sessions.

Risks & Complications

  • !Burns or blistering in darker skin types if settings are not adjusted
  • !Temporary skin lightening at the treatment site
  • !PIH in Fitzpatrick IV+ skin
  • !Ineffective on fine, blonde, or grey hair

Red Flags — Choose a Clinic Safely

  • Diode laser used on Fitzpatrick V–VI skin without adjusting to longer pulse durations and lower fluences
  • Tanned skin treated without postponing
  • No test patch before first full session
  • Promises of permanent total removal (reduction, not elimination, is the accurate expectation)

Questions to Ask Before Booking

  • Is diode laser safe for my skin tone?
  • Will you perform a test patch first?
  • How many sessions are needed for my hair type and area?
  • What sun protection is required between sessions?
  • For what skin types would you recommend Nd:YAG instead?
