What Is It?
Facial fat grafting is the same procedure as fat transfer to the face — using the patient's own harvested fat to restore volume, improve skin quality (due to the stem cells within the fat), and rejuvenate hollowed or deflated areas of the face. The term is used interchangeably with facial fat transfer.
How It Works
Fat is harvested with a blunt cannula under local or general anaesthesia, processed to remove blood and oil, and injected in micro-droplets at multiple planes. The technique requires precise placement — too shallow causes visible lumps, too deep reduces survival. The cheeks, tear troughs, temples, and lips are common target areas.
Realistic Results
Natural, long-lasting volume restoration with improved skin texture over time. Surviving fat integrates with surrounding tissue and behaves like native fat — it will gain and lose volume proportionately with body weight changes.
Recovery
Swelling peaks at 48–72 hours and largely resolves over 2–3 weeks. The face appears overfilled immediately after surgery; patients should not judge the result until 3 months post-procedure.
Risks & Complications
- !Partial fat resorption requiring touch-up
- !Overcorrection if too much fat survives unexpectedly
- !Fat necrosis creating palpable nodules
- !Infection at injection sites
- !Donor site bruising or seroma
Red Flags — Choose a Clinic Safely
- ⚑Provider promises a specific percentage of fat survival (this is not predictable)
- ⚑No structured harvest and processing protocol described
- ⚑Surgeon does not discuss the donor site appearance
- ⚑Injections performed at only one depth plane (reduces survival and increases lumpiness risk)
Questions to Ask Before Booking
- What fat processing method do you use, and why?
- How do you distribute fat across different injection planes?
- What is your policy if only a small fraction of fat survives?
- Is the donor area affected cosmetically, and for how long?
- Can fat grafting be combined with other rejuvenation procedures in the same session?
