What Is It?
Fat transfer to the body takes fat harvested by liposuction from areas with excess (abdomen, flanks, thighs) and re-injects it into areas requiring volume — such as the buttocks, hips, hands, or areas of contour depression. It uses the patient's own tissue and provides permanent results in the surviving fat.
How It Works
Fat is harvested using gentle liposuction, centrifuged or filtered to isolate viable fat cells, and then injected in small aliquots at multiple planes in the recipient area. Injection in small volumes at each pass maximises contact with vascular tissue and improves fat survival.
Realistic Results
Natural-looking, long-lasting volume in the treated area with approximately 50–70% fat survival at 3–6 months. Donor site is simultaneously improved by fat reduction. Results change proportionately with overall weight changes.
Recovery
Depends on the extent of liposuction and injection areas. Compression garments at donor sites are worn for 4–6 weeks. Recipient area should not be compressed or sat upon (if buttocks) for several weeks. Full activity at 6 weeks.
Risks & Complications
- !Variable fat survival creating asymmetry between sides
- !Donor site bruising and contour irregularity
- !Fat necrosis — calcified lumps in the grafted area
- !Infection at either donor or recipient sites
- !Fat embolism if injected near large blood vessels (rare but serious)
Red Flags — Choose a Clinic Safely
- ⚑Surgeon injects very large volumes in a single bolus rather than micro-droplets
- ⚑Surgeon does not discuss fat survival rates and the possibility of needing a second session
- ⚑Buttock fat transfer performed using intramuscular injection (significantly raises fat embolism risk)
- ⚑No compression garment protocol described
Questions to Ask Before Booking
- What fat processing technique do you use, and what is your expected survival rate?
- How do you maximise graft survival?
- Is a second session likely?
- For buttock transfer: can you confirm you will inject only into the subcutaneous layer?
- Where will you harvest the fat from, and how will the donor site look after surgery?
