What Is It?
Facial fat transfer (fat grafting) uses the patient's own fat — harvested from the abdomen, thighs, or flanks — and re-injects it into areas of the face that have lost volume with age. It addresses hollowed cheeks, deep tear troughs, thinning lips, and overall facial deflation in a way that looks and feels completely natural.
How It Works
Fat is harvested with a fine cannula using gentle liposuction, then centrifuged or filtered to isolate pure fat cells. The purified fat is injected in tiny droplets at multiple levels throughout the target area. Injecting in small quantities across different tissue planes maximises graft survival.
Realistic Results
Approximately 50–70% of transferred fat survives long-term, with results lasting many years or permanently. Because the fat comes from the patient's own body, there is no risk of rejection. The face looks naturally fuller, softer, and more youthful.
Recovery
The face is swollen for 1–3 weeks, sometimes appearing overfilled initially. The donor site has mild bruising for 1–2 weeks. Definitive results are visible at 3 months when the surviving fat has fully integrated.
Risks & Complications
- !Unpredictable fat survival (may need a second session to achieve target volume)
- !Temporary lumpiness or overcorrection before fat settles
- !Fat necrosis (rare small calcified lumps)
- !Donor site bruising and contour irregularity
- !Asymmetry if survival rates differ between the two sides
Red Flags — Choose a Clinic Safely
- ⚑Surgeon injects very large volumes in a single session without explaining resorption risk
- ⚑No discussion of how donor site will be managed or what happens to excess fat
- ⚑Provider does not centrifuge or filter the fat before injection
- ⚑No plan offered for a touch-up session if initial survival is low
Questions to Ask Before Booking
- How much fat (ml) do you plan to inject, and to which areas?
- What is your technique for maximising fat survival?
- How likely is it that I will need a second session?
- Where is the fat being harvested from, and will that area be visibly affected?
- At what point after the procedure will we evaluate the final result?
