What Is It?

FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) hair transplant is the gold-standard surgical method for restoring hair to areas affected by androgenetic alopecia (male or female pattern hair loss). Individual follicular units are extracted from a donor area (typically the back of the scalp) and reimplanted into the recipient zone with precision.

How It Works

Under local anaesthesia, each follicular unit graft is extracted individually using a specialised punch tool (0.8–1.0mm). The extracted grafts are stored in a preservation solution and then implanted into tiny incisions made at the correct angle and direction in the recipient area. Sessions typically last 6–10 hours and yield 1,500–4,000 grafts.

Realistic Results

Transplanted hairs shed at 2–4 weeks (shock loss), then regrow permanently from month 3–4 onwards. Full density is visible at 12–18 months. The transplanted hairs are genetically resistant to DHT and do not fall out with ongoing pattern loss.

Recovery

The donor area heals with tiny dot scars within 7–10 days. The recipient area has small scabs for 7–10 days. No heavy exercise for 2 weeks. The transplanted area should not be scratched or rubbed for 2 weeks.

Risks & Complications

  • !Shock loss of existing hair around the transplanted grafts (usually temporary)
  • !Low graft survival if the extraction and storage technique is poor
  • !Unnatural hairline design if the surgeon does not follow natural hairline principles
  • !Overharvesting the donor area leaving visible thinning at the back
  • !Infection or folliculitis during healing

Red Flags — Choose a Clinic Safely

  • Technicians (not the surgeon) extract and implant all grafts without surgeon involvement
  • Surgeon cannot describe their graft survival rate or technique
  • No hairline design consultation before the procedure
  • Clinics that quote extremely high graft counts (over 5,000 FUE in one day) — quality suffers at this density
  • No pre-operative assessment of donor density or recipient area need

Questions to Ask Before Booking

  • Who extracts the grafts — the surgeon or technicians?
  • What is your average graft survival rate, and how is it measured?
  • How do you design a natural hairline for my age and bone structure?
  • How many grafts do you estimate I need, and over how many sessions?
  • Will you assess my donor area to ensure I am not being over-harvested?
