What Is It?

An IPL photofacial is an IPL treatment applied to the full face to address the cumulative effects of photoageing — sun damage, brown spots, redness, uneven tone, fine lines, and enlarged pores. It is a full-face rejuvenation treatment using intense pulsed light.

How It Works

The IPL device is passed systematically over the entire face, delivering calibrated pulses. Filters are selected to target the specific chromophores of concern — 515–600nm for pigmentation, 560–590nm for vascular lesions. Multiple passes may be made at different settings to address various concerns.

Realistic Results

A clearer, more even, and brighter facial complexion after 3–5 sessions. Most visible improvement is in brown spots and diffuse redness. The full rejuvenating effect is seen at 2–3 weeks after each session.

Recovery

Mild redness and warmth for 24–48 hours. Brown spots darken, crust, and shed over 7–14 days. Baseline sun protection is essential throughout the course.

Risks & Complications

  • !Burns in skin that is tanned or treated without appropriate settings
  • !PIH in darker skin types
  • !Eye injury without proper protective eyewear
  • !Uneven results if the device is not correctly calibrated

Red Flags — Choose a Clinic Safely

  • Treatment performed on recently sun-exposed or tanned skin
  • No consultation to assess skin type, medications, or photosensitivity
  • Provider does not use protective eyewear for themselves and the patient
  • IPL performed on uncontrolled melasma (can worsen it)

Questions to Ask Before Booking

  • Is my skin tone safe for IPL, and will you use a test patch first?
  • Which of my concerns — brown spots or redness — is IPL most effective for?
  • How does a photofacial compare to a chemical peel for my overall facial rejuvenation?
  • How long should I avoid sun exposure before and after each session?
  • Are there any medications (photosensitisers) I should stop before treatment?
