What Is It?
A lip lift is a surgical procedure that shortens the space between the base of the nose and the upper lip (the philtrum), causing the upper lip to roll upward and outward for a more defined, fuller, and youthful appearance. It permanently increases vermillion show (the pink lip) without adding volume through injections.
How It Works
The most common technique is the bull-horn lip lift: a strip of skin shaped like a bull's horns is removed from directly under the nose, within the natural shadow of the nostrils. As the skin is removed and sutured, the lip rises. The scar is hidden in the natural base of the nose.
Realistic Results
The upper lip appears naturally fuller and more defined, with more tooth and lip show at rest. The result is permanent. Results suit patients with a long philtrum (over 15mm) the most. Unlike filler, the lip lift does not add volume — it repositions.
Recovery
Minimal downtime. Mild swelling for 1–2 weeks. Sutures are removed at 5–7 days. The final scar fades to a very fine line in the nasal base crease over 3–6 months.
Risks & Complications
- !Scar visibility at the nose base if healing is poor
- !Overcorrection showing too much upper teeth at rest
- !Asymmetry of the lip shape
- !Temporary numbness of the upper lip
- !Tightness when smiling during the first few weeks
Red Flags — Choose a Clinic Safely
- ⚑Surgeon does not measure your philtrum length before recommending the procedure
- ⚑Clinic offers lip lift and lip filler simultaneously without explaining how they interact
- ⚑No discussion of scar placement or fading timeline
- ⚑Surgeon does not discuss the risk of an unnatural appearance if too much skin is removed
Questions to Ask Before Booking
- Is my philtrum long enough to benefit from this procedure?
- How much skin will you remove, and how is that amount determined?
- Where exactly will the scar be placed relative to my nostrils?
- How does this differ from lip filler in terms of what it achieves?
- What happens if I want more correction later — can the procedure be repeated?
