What Is It?
Liposuction is a surgical procedure that permanently removes localised fat deposits from specific body areas using a suction cannula. It is not a weight-loss procedure but rather a body contouring technique for patients near their target weight who have stubborn, diet-resistant fat pockets. Common areas include the abdomen, flanks, thighs, arms, and back.
How It Works
Tumescent fluid (saline, local anaesthetic, and adrenaline) is first infused into the treatment area to reduce bleeding and improve fat removal. A thin cannula is inserted through small incisions and moved in a fan-like pattern to break up and suction out fat cells. The procedure can be performed under local or general anaesthesia.
Realistic Results
A permanently slimmer, more contoured silhouette in the treated areas. Fat cells removed do not regenerate. Results are most apparent at 3–6 months once swelling fully resolves. Weight stability is essential to maintain results long-term.
Recovery
A compression garment is worn for 4–6 weeks. Bruising and swelling peak in the first week and largely resolve by 3–4 weeks. Most patients return to desk work in 5–7 days and resume exercise in 4–6 weeks.
