What Is It?

Nipple surgery addresses a range of nipple and areola concerns including inverted nipples, oversized or asymmetric areolas, and puffy or overly prominent nipples. These can be corrected with minor procedures under local anaesthesia, often combined with other breast surgery.

How It Works

For nipple prominence reduction, a small amount of tissue is excised and the skin closed. For areola reduction, a ring of areola tissue is removed and the surrounding skin sutured inward. Inversion is corrected by releasing the restricting tissue bands and using internal sutures to evert and hold the nipple.

Realistic Results

Normalised nipple and areola appearance with minimal visible scarring at the areola border. Most results are permanent, though inversion can recur if internal bands were not fully released.

Recovery

Minimal downtime. Dressings are changed at 5–7 days. Sutures dissolve in 2–3 weeks. Avoid compression of the treated nipple for 2 weeks.

Risks & Complications

  • !Changes in nipple sensation
  • !Breastfeeding may be impaired if ducts are disrupted
  • !Asymmetry between the two sides
  • !Recurrence of inversion
  • !Small visible scar at the areola edge

Red Flags — Choose a Clinic Safely

  • Surgeon does not discuss the breastfeeding implication for women of childbearing age
  • No explanation of how nipple sensation might be affected
  • Asymmetry assessment is not performed before surgical planning
  • Surgeon performs the procedure without sterile technique as a 'quick fix'

Questions to Ask Before Booking

  • Which specific concern are you addressing — inversion, projection, or areola size?
  • Will this procedure impair my ability to breastfeed?
  • What is the risk of the inversion recurring?
  • Where exactly will the incision be placed?
  • Can this be done under local anaesthesia alone?
