What Is It?
Otoplasty is surgery that corrects prominent or protruding ears by reshaping the ear cartilage to bring the ears closer to the head. It can also address ear asymmetry, overly large ears, or other shape irregularities. The procedure is commonly performed in children aged 5–14 but is equally effective in adults.
How It Works
An incision is made in the natural crease behind the ear. The cartilage is accessed, scored, folded, and sutured into the desired position — typically reducing the distance between the ear and the skull and recreating the antihelical fold. The skin is then closed with fine sutures.
Realistic Results
The ears are more proportionate to the head and face, with the outer edge of the ear typically sitting no more than 2 cm from the side of the skull. Results are permanent, though a small degree of relapse (spring-back) is possible if sutures loosen.
Recovery
A head bandage is worn for 1 week. Mild soreness and tenderness last 1–2 weeks. Patients should avoid contact sports for 6 weeks. Adults return to work in 5–7 days; children typically miss 1 week of school.
Risks & Complications
- !Suture extrusion (sutures can work through the skin and require removal)
- !Asymmetry between the two ears
- !Scarring behind the ear
- !Recurrence of prominent ears if sutures fail
- !Temporary skin numbness around the ear
Red Flags — Choose a Clinic Safely
- ⚑Surgeon uses only non-permanent techniques without explaining the risk of recurrence
- ⚑Clinic performs otoplasty on children under 5 years old (ear cartilage is not fully developed)
- ⚑No post-operative head bandaging protocol
- ⚑Surgeon does not assess both ears individually for asymmetry before surgery
Questions to Ask Before Booking
- What technique will you use — suture-only, cartilage scoring, or cartilage removal?
- How do you plan for natural-looking results rather than an over-corrected appearance?
- Is there a risk of the ear springing back to its original position?
- Where exactly will the scar be?
- What are the post-operative care instructions for the first 6 weeks?
